Debaters win Tournament Championship.
The Independent debate team won the team championship over 22 other schools Saturday in Salina with the best combined record. The Salina South tournament is one of the most competitive in the state because it draws large schools from both Kansas City and Wichita. Independent debaters won 4 of the top 8 places in the KDC open division, which consisted of 33 varsity teams. Alex Cline and Chase Farha were undefeated at 5-0 and finished in second place out of 33 teams. Madison Martin and Natalie Johnson were 4-1 and took the 4th place medal. Deena Eichhorn and Victoria George were right behind in 5th place also at 4-1. Edward Sturm and Malar Muthukumar took 8th. Brandon Cope and Peter Daood finished in 12th.
Four freshman competed in the novice division and finished with winning records. Fayaz Alam and Judah Hansen finished 7th out of 30 teams. Claire Sturm and Grace Martin were 13th.
Independent debaters also earned two speaking awards. Edward Sturm won the award for the top speaker in KDC out of 66 debaters. Madison Martin also medaled as the 4th-best speaker.
