Organizations

The Independent School believes leadership and community service opportunities are vital to the development of the whole child. Organizations such as National Honor Society and Student Council offer students opportunities to serve as school leaders and to seek out ways they can contribute to the larger community.

Organizations

National Honor Society (NHS)

NHS is a national organization designed to recognize and honor high school students who have excelled in the classroom, as leaders, in community service and who have demonstrated character and integrity. The organization is also designed to provide those students with a venue to continue to exercise leadership and to give back to the community through service opportunities.

At The Independent School, NHS members work together on monthly community service projects. The Independent chapter of NHS has been recognized and received awards for its ongoing involvement with residents of Sedgwick Plaza and their annual blood drive.

Membership is available to juniors and seniors who meet the chapter's guidelines in academics, leadership, community service and character. The application process occurs in the spring of each year.

Organizations

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

NJHS serves to honor Middle School students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.

Student Council (6th - 12th Grade)

The Upper School Student Council is an active group of student leaders who serve as a liaison between the student body and the school. In addition to supporting school pride, this group contributes back to the school and community through positive representation and service.

Student Council members are involved in planning homecoming activities, the fall and winter dances, prom, and carry out yearly Upper School service projects as well as a yearly grade level community service project. In addition, groups support other campus clubs and senior members plan and provide activities for leadership week and are mentors to the Middle School Student Council.

The Middle School Student Council collaborates together as representatives of the Middle School. No offices are held, but power is distributed throughout the council to encourage a representative voice of all members. Like the Upper School Student Council, these students represent pride and plan positive activities for the student body.
