Fine Arts

The Fine Arts encompass theatre, band, choir, and visual art. The Independent School's curriculum provides opportunities in each of these areas at all levels.

Theatre

Awarded two Jesters in 2017, the Independent School Theatre Department offers a vast opportunity for participation in student run productions. This fall our All School Musical will include students from age 5 to 18.

Band

Under the direction of Mr. Joe Clements, our Instrumental Music Program is a dynamic, growing program, and all of our students have the opportunity to shine! Students can choose to study instrumental music beginning in 5th grade. Students may choose to learn a variety of instruments from brass to woodwind to percussion. In the Middle School, a full composite Band class is offered as a daily elective option for beginners as well as more advanced players. Upper School Band is the showpiece of our instrumental music department, and the band plays at all home football and basketball games as well as concerts and festivals throughout the year. They put Independent's best musical foot forward and are ambassadors for our school.

Choir

The Upper School Chamber Choir under the directrion of Matt Hanne, enjoy the opportunity for several unique community performances throughout the year. The choir performed at the beam raising ceremony for the new Mark Arts facility, they sang carols on B98 radio, and will perform at this year's Holiday Galleria sponsered by the Wichita Junior League.  All students are exposed to vocal music beginning in Pre-K and those with the passion for singing may continue on throughout their time in the Middle and Upper Schools.

Visual Arts

Art is important to our mission at every level of The Independent School. The Lower School students attend a scheduled art class once a week with Mrs. Katie Idbeis. Mrs. Idbeis incorporates all kinds of instruction, utilizing a variety of media and artistic techniques.

In the Middle and Upper Schools, students receive art instruction from Mrs. Marianne Burch. Middle school students are required to take art classes during their middle school experience and are allowed to select various art electives using a variety of mediums including glass fusing.

In the Upper School, students are offered electives in visual arts including glass art, mixed media, and pottery classes.

With independent style and creative flair, art is enjoyed throughout the day by Independent students. Over the years, students' works have been recognized as National Scholastic Art Award Winners.
