Lower School Experience

The Independent Lower School is a special place, where enthusiasm for life-long learning is cultivated. We believe in developing children socially, emotionally, and academically.

The Lower School Day

8:10 am - 3:10 pm Students may arrive as early as 7:30 am in the morning. Half-day Pre-Kindergarten students depart at 10:50 am.

After-School Care

Panther Care is available until 6 pm each school day. Families are invoiced at a rate of $5.00/hour per child for the time their student(s) participate in Panther Care. Students younger than 5 years old may attend the Wichita Montessori School’s after-school care on our campus until 6 pm. Families are also charged $5.00/hour for this program. 

Beyond the classroom

Learning extends beyond the classroom through a wide array of extracurricular activities available to Lower School students. From science and math and art, students can find many enrichment opportunities here. Some of this year’s 2016-17 offerings include:

  • Y.E.S. You Exploring Science Program by Exploration Place: K - 5th. Exploration Place Instructors visit Independent each week to lead an enriching hands-on science program. Programs vary by semester and include a field trip to Exploration Place.
  • Chess Team: K - 5th. More than 40 Lower School students are a part of this K-12 Independent team. No prior experience required.
  • Scripps National Spelling Bee: 3rd - 5th. Top spellers from each grade make it to the school spelling bee. The Lower School Champion then goes on to the Sedgwick County Spelling Bee.
  • Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP): 4th - 5th. Based on standardized test scores, Duke TIP identifies talented children and provides resources to nurture the development of these exceptionally bright youngsters.
  • Robotics: 4th - 5th. Discover the magic of bringing your robot to life! Complete cool missions using programming software. 
  • Young Rembrandts: 1st - 5th. Students learn the basics of drawing while experimenting with new media including design quality markers, colored pencils, chalk pastel, watercolor and much more. 
  • Band: 5th grade. Starting in 5th grade, Independent students may choose their own instrument and join the band. Band is an optional program and meets daily during the school day. 
  • Annual Musical: 3rd - 5th. All are welcome to participate in the annual Lower School musical.  

Sports Teams

Pre-K - 5th. Many Lower School students participate on a variety of sports teams comprised mostly of Independent students. These teams compete through Wichita area organizations.

Our Panther Enrichment Program offers Lower School students an opportunity to try new interests and activities in a fun and engaging way.
